1. Personal Details
About Me, or meet Vree
I am 36 and I live in Poland. I teach various things for a living. I am a scoutmaster. I have a PhD in psychology, my career as a scientist and academic teacher is [err, hopefully] still developing. This means I am quite proficient in statistical analysis – which in turn means various ‘readings’ of logs and parses done by various ‘specialists’ have always been a source of constant amusement for me. I am a great fan of Star Wars and I love to cook. Unfortunately I love eating what I cook. I used to be quite into iaido, kendo and ju-jutsu (nidan iaido) before quite a horrible car accident sent that to hell. If you ever tried sitting on a toilet with both your legs in casts, you’ll know what I mean.
2. Your Character - Name and item lvl: Vree, 638 – this is a major QQ for me, I hope noone notices that I do 10% of the expected dps… - Role, Class and Spec: rdps, Shadow Priest - Other Characters: not notable - If so, are you prepared to change mains for the benefit of the raid team? No, I am extremely attached to this priest, see below
3. Experience Oh dear, this might turn out to be a long one.
WoW: *I was raid leader for every boss kill (server seconds mostly) in Vanilla WoW, aside from Onyxia, Hakkar and Taerar – I was sick on the first two and trying out the viability of shadow priest’ing on the Emerald Dragon (they had just come out) so I passed the job to someone else. Cleared expansion minus (really, this is a funny story)… Ouro. So, no Staff:( Up until recently the guild was still operational here on Khadgar – Bovine Intervention. If anyone still cares about ancient history, I played as Hezz, BI’s first raid leader, later guild leader as well. *I was a raid leader in TCB. Magtheridon 1.0, then up to and including Vashj and Al’ar (server firsts), than changed guilds and played as a raider, killed Archimonde and Illidan, became raid leader again after a tiny struggle my guild had on Kalecgos, cleared Sunwell. Also, lots of Amani War Bears on main/alts:) *I was a raid leader in WotLK, starting from Naxx (the nerf was too much if you ask me, even for an entry level raid, Kharazan was better designed. New Thaddius was at least not very forgiving, but Grob or even Gluth…). After Thorim and Freya achievements we were ranked world 17 (Origin, Horde, Turalyon, I played as Sha) – we raided 3/4 times a week at that point and we were pretty damn proud of that. Cleared Trial (Algalon ofc as well) and then I took a break as I needed to advance my career. I nevertheless saw Bolvar on the throne. *Moving on, I was a raid leader in Cataclysm, blablabla killed lots of heroics. If you ask me, Blackwing Descent was one of the most unevenly designed heroics raids – compare Omnotron, which we called Omnomnomotron since they ate us alive a million times (skill test? hardly), or even Maloriak (gear check, better than Chim imo) to Atramedes who was a joke. This was also the time of a funny bug on Halfus – disc priests ruled everything left and right. I do however have a good memory of talking (I mean explaining the fight in liiiitlest details) to my raid for 40 minutes and then 1-shotting Cho’gall. This is when I left Poland and spent 10 months in Australia, which removed me from the raiding scene. *I played in Pandaria a bit, but rather casually because the changes (I ran some of those pug raids) were absolutely not to my liking. I disliked the trend to simplify it, the obvious burnout of designers, the cheeky populism of Ghostcrawler defending the absolutely, astoundingly stupid decision to reduce the game to 5 stats (1 less and it’d be MU online which my nephew played by scotch-taping 2 mouse buttons down for auto-attack and letting it go for the night), finally the fact that priests had received two times less changes to class mechanics than the next worse class in the previous 2 years. And I had been a shadow priest – since Emerald Dragons.
This is also when I was already into…. SW:ToR
*Until today I think SW was not a game for raiders – it was a game for players skewing towards RPG. I liked it very much, it was relaxing. It was actually very relaxing when it came to raiding. I did not take the position of RL initially, it would be like leading 15man ubrs or 40-man Sha. However, in the expansion (Makeb stuff) things actually got a little bit heated so I was asked to take the job. *hm/nm mode fights in that expansion where neither here nor there. Darvannis as a whole was a rollercoaster - – Titan 6 was almost exclusively about movement, Olok was boring as hell, repetitive and I still think unwipeable unless someone played with 1 hand (a result of an unfortunate bet but if I had won… akhem) and Styrak… I think someone heard of ‘gear checks’ so they decided to put one at the end of the instance and overtune it at least 10%. In Darvannis I spent most time teaching people Titan 6. Why? Because the majority of the players who started their career as players in SW… had no idea what positioning was, that they needed to return to their positions and most interestingly – that a raid is not a bunch of individual characters jumping about and caring about pressing whatever comes off cooldown. The perspective of not nuking everyone else with Lots of Missiles was too much to comprehend. I was stunned to see people not doing what I asked them to do or doing exactly the opposite. Around that time I took a slight break from MMO gaming (not gaming though!) – until Wildstar’s beta tests begun, which I was a part of.
Wildstar
I had been playing it since beta. My Exile engineer retired at just shy of 4.8k AP. I killed/farmed everything in the game minus Avatus, Ini Core and Water/Fire pair. I should probably note that I cleared GA around mid-July after the release, as raid leader, got attuned back in gold runs times etc. There is probably a lot I can say about Wildstar – and the reason I see for it failing to meet people’s expectations.
However, having read what I’ve already written here I need to assume some of you are already comatose. I will gladly talk about WS on a more fortuitous occasion of course!
Anyways, as you can see, my experience with GAMES is quite minimal (I am really not even counting my short romances with almost every MMO that came out 2005-2014). However, the games I did play, I think I played rather well. Reflecting on the past, I led the kills of over 100 server first/second kills and about the same amount of shittier kills.
4. Cold Turkey
- How you heard about us: I saw the announcement in /trade - What made you apply: I am looking to raid, this has got to be a huge shock for you! - What can you add to our Raid Team
This is a tricky question. I am not sure how valuable a player I still am.
I do not think I have ever watched any bosskill movie before writing down any strategy for my guild(s). And I did write long elaborate manuals for every boss, with lots of practical stuff in them: including moving some players 3-5 feet, or hinting that the boss’ targeting reticle is actually smaller than the blast radius etc. Players added their comments in the form of advices to others and this is how it worked. All those strategies for were written on the basis of our PTR experiences and asking class-specific questions to our players. I strongly discouraged watching movies in general too. Parroting is not understanding and I wanted players to understand the fights, experience them and learn instead of guessing ‘what is that guy in the corner doing?’ I mention this because outside of the guilds I had something to say in, we were not understood with this policy and often accused of lying about it (how the feck you say you didn’t watch anything and you kill stuff this fast?!!?!?!). I still prefer to use my own brain (which is in good working order) then someone else’s brain.
I would love to talk to someone who actually raids to address some of my ‘raiding’ concerns. Here they are: - Raiding’s always been about one of the following two: minmaxing gear (gear checks like Brutallus etc, consumables, the ONLY VIABLE talent setup) or environment awareness (ohmyjesus! Bombs are falling on my head!). I am not sure how this looks like in WoW these days: ea factor is definitely there, how difficult is the gear curve?
In summary:
I apologize I wrote this much, but writing this application brought a lot of great memories so no matter what happens I’m glad I did it:) If I am accepted I can be of an assistance to the guild when it comes to: - Raiding, playing, not dying from void zones:) I mean seriously, zero deaths from environment – first step to winning a fight - Analyzing stuff and explaining it to people. The fact someone does 20% less dps in a fight MIGHT mean things other than he’s a shit player. Also, you may have noticed somehow, around Black Temple, there were charts with spell resistance gear versus dmg output for Mother Sharaz – this is what I do when really high endgame starts. Some people call it theorycrafting, but the current ‘masters of spreadsheets’ are quite amateurish. - Not being an asshole, in a very broad sense of the word:) This includes being committed (to a certain point timewise), helpful, transferring my resources to guild members etc. but I hesitate to accept the role of full-time ‘flask farmer’ or such, unless you can prove to me minmaxing is back. I actually see people who offer to spend 40 hours a week growing weeds (ok, some weeds are acceptable:P) as rather populistic.
5. Extra
- Anything else you would like to add
I tell great bedtime stories from the times when Khadgar’s legends were level 10, Durotar was their home and Wild Boars were their prey. My favourite boss encounter and why I mention it: absolutely M’uru, over 350 wipes and world 99 kill, before the nerf. The next week we played like shit and still won comfortably. I have extremely fond memories of M’uru because we as a guild pulled through and emerged even more dedicated – the fight turned out to be a social boost, which I believe is very very important for a guild. K’J died on 3rd day which we found disappointing, but apparently our shielders were just that good and people learned to squeeze incredible dps bursts. This means I do not at all mind wiping , I do not get disheartened, I do not pretend to be sick to skip difficult raids. (I honestly admit I get exceedingly annoyed when people put their dps above their survivability and either die or strain the healers)
